Picture yourself sitting on your couch and you decide to place a bet on

ScratchCard game - just for the fun of it. As you continue to scratch, your heart suddenly skips a beat. R75 Million is yours. What now?! Many emotions and thoughts are running through your mind – it’s a lot. Let’s explore the psychological stages that many people experience.

In most cases, disbelief reigns supreme! This is the “pinch me, I must be dreaming” phase, refreshing the website to check your account balance, staring at the number and screenshotting it, etc. Psychologically, these types of reactions cause the brain's protective mechanism to do exactly what it was built to do – protect us from shock.

Psychologists call it "emotional dampening", where the mind's instinct is to slow down a stimulus that's too large to process immediately.

At some point, the silence breaks and this kind of news can't be handled alone. Choosing who to tell first is a big deal. Sometimes the first call isn't usually the most "logical" one such as calling your financial advisor or lawyer. It's the person who is most emotionally central to your life in that moment. For many people, that's their mom or dad, their significant other or their best friends. This stage highlights our desire for validation, as well as a need for guidance in navigating the new reality or way forward. Who do you think you would call first?

Now this is where the excitement can lead to spontaneous decisions and actions. For some, they buy cars. For others it's their dream home. For many South Africans it's paying off debt or someone else's before their own and this could be a parent, a sibling, a friend who's been struggling financially. The psychology behind this stage is the brain’s reward system that’s firing on all cylinders, releasing dopamine in response to the massive win. The brain always needs a proxy, and it finds one very fast.

Eventually - sometimes days or weeks later the logical brain takes a step in.

This is the stage where lists get made, calls to lawyers and accountants happen, conversations about "what does this actually mean for my life" happen and honestly, there’s no universal "right" answer to what someone does with a life-changing win. Some people move, some don't move at all. Others tell everyone or tell almost no one, quit their jobs the next day or keep going to work because it turns out the routine matters to them more than they realised.

There's no right answer. That's the whole point. The psychology of a win that big isn't about the money itself but it's about who you are when the external pressure lifts and you suddenly have room to think.

Through it all, the experience is a reminder of life's unpredictability and the reactions we possess in the face of life-changing events. Whether it’s an impulsive splurge or a carefully crafted plan, each step is valid in its own right.

LottoStar could be the start of a chain reaction, unlocking doors to dreams that have been long held in the heart – and that could all start with just one bet.

LottoStar’s Game of the Month is bringing the Halloween energy straight to the slots, combining sweet treats, little monster chefs and pumpkins with features that are designed to keep things thrilling.

Behind the cute and scary visuals of Immortal Ways Spooktacular is a 6-reel slot with 10,000 ways to win – bringing spicy features into the mix such as Scatter symbols, cascading wins, mirroring coins, free games and many more – which give players plenty to look out for.

One of the standout features is the Immortal Arrays, where mystical Coins can stick around for three spins. Then there are Prize Wheels, which can bring in spicy jackpots, multipliers and more. Now this sounds like a good kind of scary.

There’s something fitting about making Immortal Ways Spooktacular the Game of the Month during Halloween month. It has the look, the atmosphere and the features to match the season, while still giving our players plenty to discover beyond the spooky theme.

And, of course, there’s the big one: you could be spinning your way to instant payouts of up to R10 Million!

September Wrap-Up: A Month Stacked with Big Wins

We all have our thing – maybe it’s always choosing the same number or claiming the same seat every time. Maybe it’s a lucky item of clothing for big moments, or a song you listen to before an important moment. For some, it’s simpler – spotting a certain number and reading it as a sign that their luck is about to turn.

Some people call it superstition, and others call it having a system. Either way, humans have been creating lucky rituals for as long as we’ve been trying to make sense of uncertainty.

Think about the little routines we develop around our everyday life. We knock on wood, cross our fingers, avoid certain numbers and attach meaning to dates that are important to us. When something feels uncertain, having a familiar ritual can give us a sense of control and comfort and when it comes to games of chance, those rituals can become even more interesting.

Your lucky number might be your birthday, your anniversary or a number that has appeared in a memorable moment in your life. Your lucky colour might be one you associate with a particular good day. Even a favourite song can become part of your routine simply because it puts you in the right mood.

Then there are the more personal rituals. The person who always taps the screen three times before spinning the slots, chooses the same betting amount every time or those who chant a mantra out loud.

In reality, there’s an important difference between having a lucky ritual and actually having a formula for an uncertain outcome. Part of the fun is the personal connection we create with the experience. Maybe that’s why we love lucky rituals so much because they give uncertainty a little personality.

What’s your winning ritual? Do you have a number you always return to? A favourite LottoStar game? A lucky day? Or are you more of a “let’s see what happens” person?

The Psychology of Lucky Rituals

Mzansi’s shining stars have come together once again, raising a total of R698,500 for the

Founded in 1958, the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PFSA) provides daily nutritious meals to thousands of learners at schools and educational institutions across the Western Cape. By supplying ingredients, cooking equipment and training to community volunteers, PFSA helps ensure children can learn without the burden of hunger standing in their way.

A good meal means a child can focus in class instead of on an empty stomach, and that’s exactly the kind of everyday difference these funds will make, funding roughly 279,400 meals.

These are the celebs that took on the Banker, raising funds in support of the organisation:

With these funds, the Peninsula School Feeding Association will be able to continue putting nutritious meals on the table for learners who need them most – giving them a better shot at learning, growing and reaching their full potential.

When Mzansi comes together for causes like this, the impact reaches far beyond the studio floor.

September is widely known as Heritage Month in South Africa, which makes it the perfect time to celebrate the sounds, stories and culture that make Mzansi unique. This month, we’re bringing a distinctly South African flavour to our Game of the Month with

Kwaito is more than a music genre. Emerging in South Africa in the 1990s, it became closely connected to youth culture and developed its own unmistakable sound, style and attitude. Its influence can still be felt today from the music we listen to and the way we dance, to the fashion and cultural moments it helped shape. That same energy has found its way to

Kwaito Kween takes inspiration from the world of Kwaito and brings it to life through a colourful, distinctly Mzansi-inspired game. The game features vibrant symbols including disco balls, boomboxes, headphones and, of course, the Kwaito Kween herself.

The game brings its own rhythm to the spinning experience, with features and bonus mechanics adding another layer to the action. Each spin brings the anticipation of seeing what lands on the slots and whether the next combination could lead to something rewarding.

Kwaito Kween’s Jams Feature - triggered when a Kwaito Kween Scatter lands on the centre symbol of reel 2 row 2.

Free Games - land 3 Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels to activate 10 Free Games.

Wild symbols - substitute for all symbols except the Scatter, Kwaito Kween Scatter and Jackpot symbols.

Scatter symbols - can appear anywhere on the reels, with 3 Scatters paying triggering the Free Games feature.

Select your bet amount starting from as little as R0,50.

Now, if you’re wondering where the Pantsula comes in, LottoStar puts it pretty simply: Kwaito Kween is all about unleashing your inner Pantsula and moving to the Kwaito-inspired jams while you spin.

Turn up the volume this Heritage Month and spin the slots for a chance to win instant payouts of up to R10 Million on LottoStar’s exclusive Slotteries.

August Wrap-up: Big Wins, Bigger Bragging Rights

You know how some moments are planned and some just randomly happen unexpectedly? You can prepare, practise, strategise and wait for your chance but when the moment arrives, there’s only one thing left to do – to step up.

South Africa got a reminder of that last week, when Banyana Banyana secured a hard-fought 2-1 win to keep their World Cup hopes alive. And standing tall when it mattered most was goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, who earned Woman of the Match honours after an exceptional performance between the goalposts.

This was more than a football moment. It was a very South African one - where you get the feeling of watching someone rise after they’ve fallen, take centre stage and own it while you collectively hold your breath, shouting at the screen and celebrating with every South African.

Women’s Month celebrates the women who’ve broken barriers and made space for themselves and others but it’s just as much about the everyday moments. It’s about the woman who backs herself when no one else does, who takes the lead and who tries again after a setback.

Kaylin Swart’s performance is a great example. When the pressure was on, there was no time to wonder if she was ready. She had to be, and she was – save after save. That’s what being in the moment looks like.

Isn’t that what makes a great experience memorable? The anticipation before something happens, just like how you feel before placing your bet on your favourite LottoStar games.

, every game brings its own moments of anticipation, excitement and unexpected turns. Sometimes it’s less about what’s coming next and more about being there for what you’re doing in the moment. You just never know when an ordinary moment is going to become THEE moment.

Maybe that’s the real lesson from Banyana’s latest win. You don’t always get to choose when your moment arrives but you seize it when it does. Back yourself, take the opportunity at a chance for something big, such as betting on over 800 games for a chance to win instant payouts of up to R75 Million.

That’s the kind of spirit that shows us that RSA is really our DNA.

There are a few things that can humble us as South Africans like pulling up to a garage, asking the petrol attendant to fill up and watching the numbers climb. Suddenly, that quick stop becomes a full-on financial meeting in your mind. And lately? The petrol price has been doing the absolute most.

With the latest fuel price hike pushing 95 petrol to R30,25 per litre, filling up has become a more expensive part of our everyday lives. Whether you’re commuting to work, on school runs or heading out for on a weekend adventure, the cost of getting from A to B is hard to ignore.

Remember when you could take the scenic route just because you felt like it? Or agree to a quick catch-up with your friends or family without calculating the distance first?

These days, every trip can feel like it deserves its own budget meeting. That spontaneous drive to see your people might need a second thought while the weekly commute is looking less like a routine and more like a long-term investment.

Of course, we can’t control international oil prices or make the petrol pump a little kinder but we can still find ways to enjoy our downtime, have a little fun and make room for entertainment that fits our budgets.
