The Highway Hospice - selected by Riaan van Heerden
The Highway Hospice have been in existence for over 35 years and "provide care for people with advanced, incurable terminal illness in the final stages of life.". They promote Palliative care where the goal is to provide a better quality of life in a number of facets; emotionally, socially, practically, intellectually and spiritually.
Hospice care is given once all medical treatment has ceased and places focus on the care of the person in aspects such as; comfort, pain management and symptom control. Hospice care and Palliative care promote an improved quality of life. "Both palliative care and hospice care provide comfort. But palliative care can begin at diagnosis, and at the same time as treatment. Hospice care begins after treatment of the disease is stopped and when it is clear that the person is not going to survive the illness.".
The Highway Hospice has numerous sources of income. One of which is their Charity Shops, which accept donations of good quality clothing, kitchenware, linen, crockery, books, furniture etc. and sell these. the proceeds of these sales are given to the Highway Hospice. It is also a member of My School, which gives this foundation a small percentage of transactions made at participating retailers. Furthermore, the Tree of Light event is hosted for the opportunity to remember the lives of loves ones. There are volunteer musicians and food stalls, later in the evening people are asked to light their candles before the tree itself is lit with 9 000 globes. Everyone is invited to this incredible yearly event.
Supporting the Highway Hospice provides funding to ensure that those reaching the end of their lives are supported and comforted in as many ways as possible to provide a better quality of life.
